Misfiring Frontline is a Cause for Concern

Liverpool’s misery up front continues, as the current frontline of Balotelli, Lambert and Borini have failed to score even a single goal in the league this season. The misfiring attack deepens Liverpool’s already existing problems this campaign.

The Merseyside outfit are really struggling in the league, after securing only 14 points from 11 Premier League games this season. Besides, the Reds are winless in their last three Premier League matches. In those three games, Liverpool have scored only one goal, courtesy of a deflection from Gary Cahill against Chelsea. This tells the full story of the sorry Reds.

After Liverpool finishing 2nd in the League in the last campaign, hopes were high for the Reds to finally win their first-ever Barclays Premier League title. However, seeing the controversial striker Luis Suarez depart the Anfield outfit for Nou Camp in the summer, expectations were lowered for the club. To their credit, Liverpool managed to invest all the money they secured in the Suarez sale in transfers. But the real question is: Have they used the money well? Seeing the way the team has struggled this season, it does not look like the Reds have done business very productively.

Liverpool signed eight first-team players in the summer for a combined fee of 117 million. However, many experts believe that instead of buying so many players, they could have signed three or four top-quality players. The worrying thing was the quality of players which they got up front.

Balotelli and Lambert were signed by the club to replace the enigmatic Suarez. But neither of them have found their feet at Anfield and are struggling to make any sort of impact in the games. Many questioned Rodgers’ decision to sign Lambert at the age of 32. After signing Balotelli, the questions against Rodgers have further increased. Balotelli, from his Inter Milan days, was never questioned for his ability, but all the doubts pertained to his attitude. Despite playing for Manchester City and AC Milan since, he is unable to improve his attitude on the pitch.

Balotelli has managed to score only one goal in his last 25 league appearances both for Liverpool and Manchester City during his previous stint with the club in England. It is not just about his goals, but his lack of determination on the pitch that worries many fans. Balotelli is always criticized for his lack of effort to close down upon the opponents or try to win the ball after losing it. Moreover, his inability to keep up with the pace of his teammates has not gone down well with the fans.

So, counting Lambert and Balotelli alongside the existing striker Borini, the Liverpool’s attack (excluding Sturridge, who is injured) is yet to open their account in the league. The pressure on Sturridge to deliver will be immense after he returns from injury. However, without the support of other strikers, the English international cannot turn the club’s fortune on his own. It is up to the manager to the make the decision regarding the front line. If results continue in the same way, not many fans will be against selling one or two of the under-firing strikers to buy a proper centre-forward.
