Result’s Out!

You know what's the most dreadful thing? Read the first word of the title again. No, the results aren't actually out yet but they might be when you finish reading this article. Torture never ends with the end of examinations but continues till result day. It's as if you have an appointment with fear until you have result sheet in front of your eyes. I always felt that facing results is a lot less torturous in college than it was at school because, 1. It comes online and you don't have to go all the way to college carrying a pounding heart inside you, fearing it will stop any moment, and 2. Ignoring the terrible wait due to heavy rush on that particular site, it gives you the entire shock all at once unlike school where as per time-table, you had to survive the sight of different subject teachers entering classroom with a bundle of answer sheets in her hands and then waiting with folded hands and closed eyes for your roll number to be called out. The only thing that's common is, as the hype starts to ratchet up, your stomach very well starts to churn. This is of course normal and so are the following points :-

— As soon as the day of result comes nearer, you start recalling how each & every paper went, how many questions you skipped and how in some papers you mastered the art of making silly mistakes. Will worrying about all this improve your result which, most probably, is already decided, you just haven't received it yet? For many the actual results are quickly forgotten and it is only the memory of that intense stress leading up to them that remains.

— You start thinking of the extremes, that maybe some magic happened and you topped the semester; or maybe that magic wand was broken leading to the reverse outcome and thus failure for you! You yourself know neither of the above is true, reality lies somewhere in the middle mostly. Isn't the outcome that some people will be celebrating while others will be a bit disappointed, always known? Even if it's the latter for you, it's not the end of the world!

— More than the result itself, some students fear the comparisons they'll be forced to become part of by their parents and teachers. If the earnest attempts to make them understand that comparisons never work in the right direction, haven't yet borne fruit, then let's just assume that both of them cannot stand without comparing. Help yourselves in this case and never forget that exams judge skills and knowledge, they aren't a judgement on you or a reflection of your self-worth.

— Even before the result arrives, students start making deals with God to make them score well this time and you'll put-in all your hard-work the next time in return. Seriously?! Stop fooling yourselves. Once the result is out, you're going to forget all promises you made to God or to yourselves within a month. Good result isn’t the goal but the means to the goal. Instead of seeing these results as a major milestone, view them as one step to where you want to be in your future life and career. So, stop making insane deals, remind yourselves how much this future goal means to you and this may create in you the motivation to perform better.
