5 things you needn't expect from Delhi University

Come the end of July and the Delhi University will witness a fresh set of students arriving at its doorstep with new expectations, hopes and dreams. But dear freshers, all that glitters is not gold. Delhi University is not Student Of The Year’s St. Teresa’s or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’s St. Xavier’s which featured a college life that was too good to be true! Trust me, it was. Such wonderlands exist only in the fantasy of the silver screen and the reality of college life is just a little bit different. So before you come with these cinematic expectations, let me bring home a few truths about Delhi University that you absolutely must know before you step foot on our campus. Here are the 5 things that you need NOT expect from your college-to-be.

Great Infrastructure: Some buildings are so fragile that they might be knocked down by strong gusts of wind! In case there are any ‘Under Construction’ areas in your college, walk safe lest you should end up with cement on your clothes. And don’t you dare expect Air Conditioning here!

No Early Morning class: Dear juniors, wake up from your dreams of getting up at your convenience and walking into college fashionably late at 11 or 12 am. Yeah, we have 8:30 am classes as well. And yeah, you will have to attend them too!

Finding the Perfect Match: Dreamt of having an awesome college love-life? Just enter the campus and you will find many such people yet dreaming of the same. Some may be lucky enough to find the right person; but for the majority it will just be life as usual and you may just remain as single as ever.

Proxies and Attendance: Please, please don’t think that you will be granted “free ki attendance. And God forbid if you consider yourself smart enough to outwit your teachers in all such matters. They’ve seen far too many tricks in their years of experience to be fooled by any more.

No Studies: For those harboring this delusion, let me say this out front. You had better pay some attention in class and do the assignments you’re given. If not, then be prepared to stay up all night and mug up some big fat books on the eve of the exam. Ain't the easiest thing to do; and I speak from experience. :D

Amazing Social Life: If you’re dreaming of a hot and happening social life with cool hangouts every day, don’t. Yes, exploring the world around will go on for a few weeks, but after that you will find yourself sitting in some corner finishing your notes for the upcoming class.

Yummy canteens: If you are thinking of abandoning your lunch boxes in colleges, please give it another thought. We do have breaks here, and we do eat from our own boxes. Chhole Bhature, Sev Puri, Chole Chawal etc. is all that you will get in the canteens. No fancy cuisines, nothing. You will also be munching “Hully Gully” in between the classes, the very own franchise of Delhi University, substitute for Fun Flips and Kurkure. (This is specifically for South Campus students.)

So while college isn’t the fairyland that the movies make you believe it is and while you will have to do what you’re primarily here for (a.k.a. study) it’s still an experience that you’re going to cherish for the rest of your lives.

All the best juniors! Here’s to a rocking start!
